Tips for College Females

Posted on Posted in Common Sense Tips

College should be one of the best experiences of your life. For the first time you have a new freedom, and you are meeting new people. 1 in 4 college females will be the victim of rape. College females are most vulnerable to rape during the first few weeks of their freshman and sophomore years. There are many ways and tips to protect yourself from being apart of these statistics.

Tip #1- If you go out anywhere at night ALWAYS walk in big groups! Never walk by yourself. Try to have guys in your group. Someone seeing a young girl walking down the street by themselves at 2 a.m. just screams grab me.

Tip #2- Are you by yourself and don’t have anyone to walk with you? Make sure you walk in well lit areas and avoid going down any sketchy alleys.

Tip #3- Be aware of your surroundings. You have peripheral vision use it! Don’t walk with your head down  staring at the ground, be alert and look around you especially behind you. Every once in awhile just check to make sure no one is following you.

Tip #4- Carry pepper spray. Added bonus if you are carrying a purse! You can use the purse as a weapon to beat on the person and then use your pepper spray. Not sure where to purchase it? Walmart, and Dicks Sporting Goods sells them, or you can buy it online.

Tip #5- Have your phone out. I am not saying to focus all your attention on your Twitter or Facebook but just have it. If it makes you feel safer, call someone and talk with them until you reach your destination but still be alert of your surrounds.

Tip #6- Don’t wear headphone if you are walking by yourself. Most likely you will be jamming out and not paying attention to what is around you. Someone could come up behind you and grab you.

Tip #7- Most colleges have public safety. You can call them if you are not feeling safe walking by yourself and someone will come and escort you.

Tip #8- Feeling like someone is following you? Move to the side and let them pass you. Make a phone call or
change the direction in which you are going.

Tip #9- If you are put in a situation where you have to be defensive, always scream as loud as you can so someone can   hear you (also to make the person deaf), take the bottom of    the palm of your hand and jam it up against the bottom of their nose as hard as you can, and lastly kick them where you know it hurts!

Tip #10- Colleges have self defense classes and events you can attend if you would like to learn different moves and become more confident with using them.

Hopefully these tips can help you and make you feel safer! Thanks for reading!
